The Department of Medical Imaging at Taichung Veterans General Hospital (formerly Department of Radiology until September 2024) was established in September 1982 as a branch division of Veterans General Hospital. Initially staffed with radiologists transferred from Taipei Veterans General Hospital, the department has since evolved into a leading center for diagnostic imaging and interventional radiology in central Taiwan. A significant milestone was achieved in 2002 with the implementation of a hospital-wide Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS), revolutionizing the department's diagnostic imaging capabilities.
The department's current staff includes 24 board-certified radiologists, 11 radiology residents, 10 contracted physicians, and 83 certified radiologic technologists. Operations are structured into eight specialized divisions:
  • Division of Interventional Radiology
  • Division of Cardiopulmonary Radiology
  • Division of Abdominal Radiology
  • Division of Neuroradiology
  • Division of Pediatric & Emergency Radiology
  • Division of Musculoskeletal Radiology
  • Division of Diagnostic Ultrasonography
  • Division of Magnetic Resonance Imaging
Each division is headed by a subspecialty-trained radiologist, ensuring high-quality subspecialized radiological services. The department provides a comprehensive range of diagnostic and interventional services, including conventional radiography, ultrasonography, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), mammography, dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA), and image-guided interventional procedures. The annual examination volume exceeds 455,000 studies.
The department maintains an accredited training program, offering comprehensive education for radiology residents, medical interns, and visiting fellows. Additionally, it serves as a training center for radiologists and radiologic technologists from other institutions, contributing to the advancement of radiological expertise in the region.
