Mrs. Tao experienced constipation issues 5 to 6 years ago. Last year, she began feeling a noticeable discomfort in her anus, and the hemorrhoid tissue protruded about 1 to 2 centimeters, significantly impacting her daily life. Seeking treatment, she visited TCVGH. After undergoing minimally invasive laser ablation surgery combined with high ligation of blood vessels technique, she resumed her normal quality of life within 3 days after the operation. The Colorectal Surgery team at TCVGH held a press conference on the 19th to share cases and results.
Dr. Feng-Fan Chiang, Director of the Colorectal Surgery Department at TCVGH, pointed out that hemorrhoids are a common anal disease often causing discomfort and bleeding, significantly affecting the quality of life. According to health insurance statistics, hundreds of thousands of people in Taiwan seek medical attention for hemorrhoids every year. However, traditional surgical treatments require large incisions, leading to noticeable pain and longer recovery times after surgery. To avoid affecting their daily lives and work during the recovery period, many people choose to endure the symptoms rather than opting for surgical treatment. If the condition worsens, it may increase the difficulty of subsequent treatments.
To address the hesitancy of hemorrhoid patients towards surgery, TCVGH has introduced minimally invasive laser ablation surgery. Dr. Kai-Hsiang Chen, a colorectal surgeon at TCVGH, explained that the procedure involves making a small incision of 0.2 centimeters near the anus and inserting a 6 cm laser fiber to perform laser ablation inside the hemorrhoid tissue. This process evaporates the moisture inside the hemorrhoid cells, causing the hemorrhoid tissue to shrink and the surrounding tissue to solidify, simultaneously reducing blood flow.
Dr. Chen stated that this surgery does not require excision, allowing hemorrhoid patients to undergo treatment with a smaller wound. Compared to traditional surgery, which takes about a week for the discomfort to improve, the recovery period for laser surgery is shorter. Furthermore, the minimally invasive laser ablation surgery combined with high ligation of blood vessels technique enhances the effects of laser ablation by ligating the supplying arteries, reducing the risk of bleeding and hemorrhoid recurrence.
TCVGH also presented international clinical research findings on the application of minimally invasive laser ablation surgery (LHP) combined with high ligation of blood vessels for hemorrhoid treatment at the Annual Meeting of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons (ASCRS) in June. Dr. Chen mentioned that TCVGH has successfully performed over 350 surgeries using this technique. After conducting follow-up interviews with nearly 200 laser hemorrhoid patients six months post-surgery from 2020 to 2022, the overall satisfaction rate exceeded 90%, and the hemorrhoid recurrence rate was less than 10%. This approach provides patients with a more comfortable treatment option.
