The Taichung Veterans General Hospital Muslim Prayer Room Unveiling and Official Opening: A New Milestone in Cross-Cultural Inclusion and Medical Services.

May 24, 2024, marked a historic moment for Taichung Veterans General Hospital with the inauguration and opening ceremony of its Muslim Prayer Room. Recognizing that Taiwan is a society rich in diverse cultures, we understand the importance of respect and inclusion, particularly in the critical field of healthcare. Faith provides indispensable spiritual comfort to patients and their families, making it the hospital's unshirkable responsibility to offer a quiet and appropriate place for religious prayers.

Muslims living in Taiwan make up approximately 0.3 to 0.4% of the total population, most of whom are concentrated in the southern regions, particularly Kaohsiung City, Tainan City and Pingtung County. In Asia, Muslims constitute approximately 30 to 40% of the overall population, with significant numbers being found in the countries of Indonesia, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Malaysia. Therefore, the design of the Muslim Prayer Room within Taichung Veterans General Hospital has been meticulously planned, with its location being found in a quiet corner on the east side of the 1st floor of the new outpatient building, ensuring maximum peace and privacy for all welcomed worshippers. Additionally, washing facilities are provided nearby, allowing worshippers to cleanse themselves according to traditional rituals before prayer, as in accordance with Islamic guidelines.

The opening of the Muslim Prayer Room at Taichung Veterans General Hospital is not just a symbolic gesture but also a practical action demonstrating our facility’s commitment to providing a diverse range of medical cultural services. Through offering such an environment, we aim to show our respect for Islamic culture as well as the Muslim faith, further fostering our connections with the Muslim world while also enhancing the integration and future development of our healthcare services.
