Established in 1982, Taichung Veterans General Hospital (TCVGH) is recognized as one of the leading and most respected healthcare institutions in Taiwan. As the only National Medical Center in central Taiwan, the TCVGH is a trusted tertiary healthcare provider with over 1,600 beds and 6,000 employees, and handles over 8,500 outpatient visits daily. The TCVGH has built a reputation for excellence in quality of care by providing a comprehensive range of medical services in a variety of specialized fields.
Various medical centers, staffed by highly qualified professionals, and provisioned with state-of-the-art medical technologies have been set up to promote integrated care. Former Superintendent, Dr. Shih-Ann Chen, has been dedicated to making the hospital a leading-edge smart healthcare emphasizing on advanced medical technologies and precision medicine. Dr. Chen and the team provide high-quality medical services and build up a comfortable and enjoyable environment for the patients and employees.
Since 1987, the team of the TCVGH's Smart Healthcare began to build the Electronic Health Information System (E-HIS), including Electronic Medical Record (EMR), Nursing Information System (NIS), Laboratory Information System (LIS), Picture Archiving and Communication system (PACS), and Health Management Information System (HMIS). In 2009, TCVGH became the first hospital in Taiwan to implement EMR. With the great success of the hospital-wide E-HIS, we obtained Smart Institution Award from the National Healthcare Quality Award organized by the Joint Commission of Taiwan in 2015 and 2019. The excellent E-HIS was introduced into our satellite 12 Veteran Hospitals successfully in 2020. The US news announced that the TCVGH was selected the World's Best Smart Hospitals 2023.
The TCVGH established the Committee for Regenerative Medicine, which oversees tumor (cancer) treatment, regenerative medicine and stem cell therapy, as these diseases are the three vital fields necessary for our development. All three of these specialties are performed through genetic testing and analysis based on evidence, and provide tailor-made personalized medicine. We have set up a genetic laboratory, stem cell laboratory and chimeric antigen receptor T-cell laboratory, which allow the performing of CAR-T therapy and international clinical trials, and make TCVGH become one of the four medical centers in Taiwan with the ability to execute CAR-T therapy. Ten regenerative medicine teams have been established to undergo allogeneic stem cell therapy to help patients with hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE), Cerebral Palsy, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), Pulmonary Fibrosis, Dementia, Congestive heart failure and Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE). All the precision and regenerative medical services we have offered are provided for patients with the safest, the most suitable treatment and disease prevention methods.
The TCVGH has made many achievements leading the whole Taiwan in heart replacement, liver replacement, endoscopic surgery, and surgical navigation and monitoring systems. Our catheter ablation for cardiac arrhythmia and children's interventional cardiac catheterization treatments have set many new records in the Asia even in the world. We first routinely use the Da Vinci robotic arm in clinical practice, and treat head and neck tumors with Da Vinci robotic arm surgery in Taiwan. Currently we are the center of excellence for urology, colorectal surgery, and head and neck surgery with Da Vinci robotic arm surgery. TCVGH was awarded by the Asia Pacific League of Associations for Rheumatology as a Center of Excellence, and recognized as an International Diabetes Federation Centre of Excellence in Diabetes Care. We organized the Committee of Advanced Medicine through the recruitment of outstanding professionals and the introduction of new medical technologies, the establishment of several characteristic medical centers, the most advanced hybrid operating room in the Asia, Renaissance System, and the CyberKnife System, etc.
Taichung Veterans General Hospital has passed the accreditation of teaching hospitals for physicians and medical personnel. We own the national examination center for Objective Structured Clinical Examination, and advanced VR/AR Training Center, Minimal Invasive Surgery Training Center, and Simulation Training Center, etc., training for more than 2,000 people per year. TCVGH has become the teaching hospital of the School of Medicine Post Baccalaureate Program, National Chung Hsing University in 2022. In terms of research, we have cooperated with National Chung Hsing University and National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University to establish several medical research institutes, and cooperated with major research institutions such as Academia Sinica, National Applied Research Laboratories, National Health Research Institutes and many universities to continue to develop clinical trials and promote government-industry-university cooperation. We have obtained 191 patents by May 2023, and 753 SCI papers have been accepted in 2022. TCVGH has won the Executive Yuan's "Government Service Award" four times in 2010, 2016, 2019 and 2022, we are committed to improving our service quality.
The International Medical Service Center was established in 2007, which receives approximately 13,000 annual visits from both foreign residents and travelers in Taiwan. In order to achieve one of our many objectives, the offering of international assistance and rescue, we have executed national-level medical cooperation programs and sent medical mission teams to Vietnam, Thailand and the Republic of Nauru. Emergency medical assistance is also provided to overseas Taiwanese and those foreigners who have come to Taiwan seeking both emergency and cutting-edge medical treatments. For international exchange programs, we provide personnel training, co-organized seminars and sign Memorandums of Understanding. And of course, foreign medical personnel are always welcome to visit TCVGH for purposes of undergoing long-term training.
