Introduction

Division of Allergy, Immunology and Rheumatology (AIR) of Taichung Veterans General Hospital was founded in July, 1982. Our division was the first to combine these 3 specialized fields into an independent subspecialty in Taiwan. The founder was Dr Joung-Liang Lan. Second chief was Dr Der-Yuan Chen. Dr Yi-Hsing Chen is our present (3rd) chief of the Division.
Under the leadership of Dr Lan Joung-Liang and Dr Chen Der-Yuan, AIR Division in our hospital has become a renowned immunology and rheumatology center in Taiwan. We own the largest patient cohort of rheumatic and systemic lupus erythematosus in the country. Our center is also one of the major tertiary referral medical centers of this field.
 

In 2014, we were awarded SNQ of Taiwan by its excellency of clinical care in rheumatic patients.

In 2017,we are endorsed as APLAR Center of Excellence in Patient Care, Medical Education, and Research.

Multidiscipline patient-centered care

AIR team members are multidisciplinary consist of rheumatologist, specialized nurse, physiotherapist, dietician, pharmacist and social worker. We provide medical consultation on allergic diseases, autoimmune diseases, rheumatoid arthritis and related diseases. We also work together with various departments to provide a patient-centered care and approach holistically to every individual patient (including in and out-patient services, musculoskeletal ultrasound, patient education and physiotherapy). We also participate actively in numerous various phases of global clinical trials and provide the most updated, state-of-the-art treatment options to our patients.

Clinical Immunology Lab

AIR’s laboratory was certified by ISO 15189 including a laboratory for paternity test. Currently we are providing more than 180 different immunology laboratory testing services for our hospital as well as other medical centers in the country.

Research and Teaching

Our center participates actively in various clinical trials and work closely with many institutions including Taiwan National Health Research Institute, Taiwan Industrial Technology Research Institute, National Yang-Ming University, National Chung Hsing University and Tunghai University. We have published more than hundreds journal locally and internationally. Our team members are enthusiastic in clinical teaching and work toward the hospital motto of becoming a center of excellence in teaching.
