Nauru health minister gets eye treatment in Taiwan
TAIPEI, Taiwan — Nauru’s health minister, Valdon Dowiyogo, has completed medical treatment for retinal and macular degeneration, a hronic eye disorder affecting the retina, at Taichung Veterans General Hospital, a hospital ophthalmologist said.
Dowiyogo was affected by retinal disorders and macular degeneration caused by complications from diabetes, which can eventually lead to blindness, according to Chang Chia-jen, a division head at the hospital’s Department of Ophthalmology.
He had previously undergone eye surgery in Australia but a medical team from the hospital judged during an international medical mission in Nauru that Dowiyogo needed to receive additional medical treatment for his eyes or risk blindness, Chang said.
