Since the establishment of Taichung-VGH in 1982, the Department of Surgery has been devoted to our missions of high-quality patient care, education and research. Our surgical team consists of specialists in different areas. There are 6 divisions including General Surgery, Colorectal Surgery, Plastic Surgery, Thoracic Surgery, Pediatric Surgery and Urology. Our additional task forces includes a Trauma Team, Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN) Team, Organ Transplantation Recruitment Team. Surgical Education Team (UGY, PGY1 and Resident training), Surgical Skills Training Center and Prostate Cancer Prevention Center and Surgical ICU.

The department specializes in cancer procedures, minimally invasive surgery and organ transplantation. Some of our operations, such as resection of liver cancer, Whipple operation, breast cancer, endocrine surgery, radical prostatectomy, lung cancer resection, laparoscopic colon resection and oral cancer surgery, have been highly acclaimed among local and international colleagues. We also conduct minimally invasive operations such as adrenalectomy, nephrectomy, prostatectomy, thoracoscopic lung, thymoma and esophageal cancer resection. Integration of chemotherapy, target therapy and various innovations of irradiation are ongoing for achieving our major goal of improving cancer treatment rates. The department also conducts transplantation of the kidney, liver, lung and heart.

In the past 30 years we have shouldered the responsibilities for treating major surgical disorders in central Taiwan. We will continue to seek improvement in high quality surgical care based on security, continuity, integrity, accessibility, appropriateness, and participation. In addition, we have performed well in teaching and research based on a solid foundation, and we will continue to seek improvement in these two areas.
