In Taiwan, the proportion of elderly people (those aged over 65) first exceeded 7% in 1993. It is expected that in 2017 the percentage of elderly population will reach 14%, and will therefore, fulfill the definition of an "aged society", according to WHO guidelines. To meet the care needs of this rapidly growing population of aged persons, the Center for Geriatrics and Gerontology was established in July 2008, in Taichung Veterans General Hospital. Our mission is to provide holistic, interdisciplinary and continuous geriatric care for older people. For those with diseases, our major aims are to maintain their functional activity and quality of life according to severity, disability, family or community resources, potential to recover, and personal preferences. In generally healthy older persons, we shall stress preventive medicine and health promotion.
