Introduction

    The Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Women’s Health at Taichung Veterans General Hospital , and  its many Division members , are dedicated to patient- and family-focused care  to provide women and their families with the most advanced care available service anywhere. since its establishment in 1983. Four divisions have been established since 1998: Gynecology Urogynecology and Gynecologic Oncology), Obsteterics(Maternal-Fetal Medicine, Prenatal Diagnosis and Medical Genetics and Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility.

The Division Gynecology includes specialists in gynecologic oncology and urogynecology, respectively. More than 10,000 gynecological cancer patients have been treated and followed up with good survival outcome. In addition to evidence-based care, we also devote to provide up-to up to date - care including laparoscopic surgery, da Vinci surgery, and novel targeting therapy to improve the quality of care. Moreover, we also emphasize to incorporate the spirit of palliative care since disease diagnosis. We are also dedicated to cervical cancer screening. Since 1993 up to 2007, more than 120,000 women residing in districts of low medical resources in Taiwan had been screened. Our urogynecologists takes care of patients with various pelvic floor dysfunction and female urinary problems. As for benign tumors, we use minimally invasive endoscopic managements which have demonstrated their superiority and cost-effective benefits.   

The Division of Obstetrics offers 24-hour antepartum, delivery (central electronic fetal monitoring) and postpartum inpatient services, with approximately 1,500 deliveries (primary cesarean section rate less than 30%) yearly. We provide consultation services for high-risk pregnancies in central Taiwan on a referral basis. Multidisciplinary team work by attending perinatologists, neonatologists, interventional radiologists and medical and surgical specialists and obstetrical anesthesiologists is offered to handle the most complex needs of high- risk pregnant women with significant medical and surgical complications. The Antenatal Diagnostic Center, equipped with color Doppler imaging, 3D/4D ultrasound, can also provide all levels of ultrasound scanning andUltrssound-guided  interventional procedures. Meanwhile, this hospital is a certified mother-and-baby friendly hospital, which supports mother-friendly care and encourages breastfeeding.

   The Division of Prenatal Diagnosis and Medical Genetics combines the efforts of different specialists, including perinatologists, molecular and cytogenetic experts, sonographers, and genetic counselors. A cytogenetic laboratory provides chromosomal analysis for samples from amniotic fluid, blood and abortus tissue. A molecular labarotory provides the tests for thalassemia gene diagnosis, SRY gene study and other rare genetic disorders. We also arrange non-invasive prenatal testing and array CGH for cases indicated. A full-time genetic counselor provides genetic counseling for patients affected with genetic disorders. In the year 2015, we enrolled 620 cases for prenatal genetic counseling. All cases after receiving genetic counseling will be proceeded to further studies on an individual basis.

    The Division of Reproductive Endocriology and Infertility is one of the pioneer centers which develops the function of endoscopy from diagnostic to therapeutic applications. Currently, minimally invasive surgery by laparoscopy, mini-laparoscopy and hysteroscopy are widely applied in the field of reproductive surgery. As one of the governmental Ministry of Health and Welfare-approved assisted reproductive service and training centers, all frontier ART facilities and techniques such as in vitro fertilization, gamete and embryo micromanipulation, cryopreservation of oocytes, ovarian and testicular tissue etc. could be performed securely in our fully-equipped laboratory by staff physicians and embryologists to achieve viable healthy pregnancies. In addition, diagnostic and therapeutic services in the classical fields of reproductive endocrinology, family planning, reproductive surgery and menopausal medicine etc. are provided.
