Center for Functional Esophageal Disorders
Team introduction
Our team cooperates interdisciplinarily including pulmonology, thoracic surgery, otolaryngology and nutrition specialties to diagnose and treat refractory gastroesophageal reflux, laryngopharyngeal reflux and dysphagia.
Our team has a series of esophageal function tests, including high-resolution esophageal manometry, multichannel intraluminal impedance-pH monitoring, and wireless esophageal pH monitoring (Bravo). We also developed an online patient-reported outcome system to assess symptoms and dietary patterns, and to offer dietary education.
Our team serves more than 500 new patients each year, with more than 80 undergoing esophageal functional testing to facilitate the arrangement of follow-up surgery, medications and dietary treatment.
Outstanding achievements
Dr. Chang Chi-Sen and Dr. Lien Han-Chung are the founding chairman and secretary-general of the Taiwan Neurogastroenterology and Motility Society, respectively, and the two have held the 2017 and 2021 Taiwan annual conferences of the society.
In 2017, Dr. Lien was invited to an international conference in the United States, Digestive Diseases Week, where he orally presented the physiology of laryngopharyngeal reflux disease. Afterwards, Professor Rena Yadlapati of the University of California, San Diego, USA, issued an article praising Dr. Lien’s research a breakthrough in this field in the past 30 years.
The gold standard testing in diagnosing reflux episodes
(A) Wireless esophageal pH value monitoring, (B) ambulatory hypopharyngeal multichannel intraluminal impedance-pH.
